The 2019 National Beach Soccer league kicked off on Sunday 8th, September 2019 at Lido Beach Resort, Entebbe, with thirty seven (37) goals being scored on day one.
In Nimsport’s interview with the chairman of the association in charge of Beach Soccer in Uganda, Mr Deo Mutabaazi, he promised supporters nothing less than entertainment by what will be a much more competitive league this season, pointing out the players’ target for national team calls, ahead of the AFCON that will be hosted in Uganda shortly, as the main driving force for above par performances.
“Due to the fact that we (Uganda) are going to host the Beach Soccer AFCON 2020, all players will be yearning for a position on the national team, creating competition in the league,” noted Mr Mutabaazi.
The league’s defending champions, St Lawrence University, started on a high note, registering a hard fought 8-5 win over Entebbe Sharks.
Last season’s top scorer, Sulaiman Ochero, Swalleh Simbwa, and Emmanuel Wasswa all scored a brace, while Farouk Kiberu and John Kikonyogo netted one goal each. Collins Sseruwu netted a hat-trick, with Abdul Matovu and Timothy Tito scored a goal each for the Entebbe Sharks.
The 2017/18 champions, Isabeti, orchestrated a 7-4 win over KIU in the other game on the day. Isaac Otto and John Atwijuka both scored twice, while Roch Somoka, Rica Byaruhanga, and Hassan Kivumbi added a goal each for Isabeti.
KIU pulled four back through Isaac Eshioke, Yinusa Muftan, Bashir Babu, and an own goal from John Atwijuka, but these weren’t enough to guide their team to triumph over Isabeti.
New league entrants, Kiringente, played down a one all draw (1-1) in their debut season opener. The great talent in Rajab Okello scored for the newcomers while Paul Lwere netted for Talented.
Real Galacticos Kyadondo defeated fellow newcomers, Wolves, via a 5-3 scoreline, in what was a very interesting tie. Hamis Kafeero registered a hat-trick to his name, adding to goals scored by Abdul Karim Kibalama and Ronald Kayanja for the Real Galacticos, while Farouk Kawuma, Henry Lukanga, and an own goal from JoJo Mutebi were the only three goals scored for Wolves.
